HOW TO PROTECT FROM HUMAN - HUMAN CONTACT

If you or anyone you know has the symptoms of the Nipah Virus, report yourself or ask them to get tested. If you were in contact with anyone with symptoms or has the virus, isolate yourself until the incubation period is over. Use safety protection when on farms or livestock farms, and do not eat fruit that has not been thoroughly washed or looks to be bitten out of. Avoid contact with others’ bodily fluids.

TO FARMERS: PROTECTION OF LIVESTOCK

Conduct farm checks to see if there are any contaminated fruits or crops on farms. Report any suspicious animal deaths, and conduct livestock checks frequently for signs of symptoms or deaths. When working with livestock and animal excrements, use proper protective gear (PPE) to ensure that you don't come in contact with potentially harmful or infected animal fluids.

TREE SAP SAFETY

Another common way the Nipah Virus can spread via bats is when they contaminate tree sap by drinking from it (tree sap is a relatively common drink in southern Asia). Drinking infected tree sap is a way the virus can spread to humans. Some ways to prevent this is for to stop drinking raw palm tree sap and instead filter it. Also, making sure sap is covered at night can prevent bats from accessing the sap. On the government's end, enacting policies regarding the selling of raw tree sap, and ensuring local people have access to bamboo covers to will help tremendously. Protection of this kind is crucial for the health of animals and humans.
